JODY CALLAN

Can you tell us a little more about you and your styling background?
I didn’t plan on a career as a bridal hairstylist but it was something I was good at and felt more natural to me than cutting and colouring and I loved that I could be more flexible with my bookings. So, in 2017 my freelance bridal hair business began.
What bridal trends are you loving right now?
I love messy effortless, modern and boho styles. That’s how I love to wear my hair, so I guess it’s where my creative passion comes from.
What new trends can we look forward to?
I think accessories are always coming into trend. I love layering different clips, combs and headbands with simple effortless styles. Low, sleek looks and higher buns are going to be popular too. But, there will always be the glam waves, beachy waves & boho waves we all love to put our own twist on.
How do you stay inspired?
Definitely following your page! Plus all the other incredible hairstylists on social media. While I keep to my own styling, I love that each of us are so unique in what we create.
What advice would you give to a bridal hairstylist just getting started?
Be authentic to you. Post the bridal styles you love creating, so you attract your perfect Bride. Keep on track with your brand and what your style is. Try not to focus on the numbers on social media; look at it as a platform to showcase your beautiful work to your Brides. Make friends in the industry. So many referrals come from other talented hairstylists who are already booked. Take part in a styled shoot collab with local makeup artists to increase your content and awareness. If you put in the work, your business will flourish. But – be kind to yourself and believe in yourself as the best supporter of your work is you!!
Best advice to a bride regarding her hairstyle?
Choose a hairstyle that enhances you, not changes you.
Look at hairstyle inspiration that is the same colour as your hair or similar as this gives you a realistic idea of how your hair will look.
What is the one product/tool you can not live without?
My GHD tools. I have them all, so couldn’t possibly narrow it down to one but if I had to – my GHD Glide is my fave right now.
Best advice you have ever been given in our industry?
It’s not just your work that gets you places, it’s your personality. So, always be kind to others.
What do you love to do outside of work?
I love to spend lazy days with my family, sipping on a cool drink by our pool or at the beach. Living in sunny Queensland, we are blessed to live an outdoors lifestyle and we tend to gravitate to any where there is water.
Guilty pleasures?
I love a good wine & cheese. I cannot say no to a grazing table!
