CLAIRE HARTLEY

Can you tell us a little more about you and your styling background?
I am a hair artist based in the UK. I studied Fashion Styling & Photography at the London College of Fashion before starting my journey in hairdressing. I’ve been in the hair industry for around 20 years now, mostly salon based but started up freelance in 2018. I am now lucky enough to have a job that I am incredibly passionate about and thoroughly enjoy.
What bridal trends are you loving right now?
I am a huge fan of the textured boho braids at the moment but am also loving a ponytail for a modern twist. Details like incorporating a braid to a style is also a winner in my book, I love mixing things up with something a little different for that wow factor.
What new trends can we look forward to?
I think the boho trend will continue but may alter slightly, we might see styles placed slightly higher but still with lots of texture and movement.
How do you stay inspired?
Generally my inspiration will come from our amazingly talented community, I love seeing other hair artists work but will always try and put my own spin on anything I recreate! One of the things I love about my job is that you never stop learning. I am always coming across new techniques and just love seeing a style that makes me stop and think “How is that done?”
What advice would you give to a bridal hairstylist just getting started?
Apart from the obvious answer of practicing to perfect your art, I would say a huge part of setting up a business is being seen. Build a portfolio of your work, get your name out there, network with other wedding suppliers, get involved with styled photoshoots, enter awards, bombard your social media with beautiful photos, get all your clients to review you ….. The list goes on! All of these things required me to step out of my comfort zone at the start, we have all been there but it really is amazing what happens when you push yourself!
Best advice to a bride regarding her hairstyle?
Have a trial!!!! This really is such an amazingly important part of your journey with your chosen hair artist! This is time dedicated to fine tuning your chosen style and a chance for you to meet each other. If you have any concerns they can be talked through and you can make sure that you are 100% happy with how your hair looks and feels. This eliminates any worry on the big day and you can enjoy your morning stress free!
What is the one product/tool you can not live without?
If I had to choose one it would be a texture spray or powder, I cannot live without adding texture to my styles.
Best advice you have ever been given in the hair industry?
Believe in yourself! Inhale confidence, exhale doubt.
What do you love to do outside of work?
I love lazy Sunday mornings, spending time with the family and adventures overseas.
Guilty pleasures?
Cheese, chocolate orange and watching hair tutorials 🙂
