Courtney Mizell

Can you tell us a little more about you and your styling background?
Hey so I’m Courtney, I am based in Spring,Texas. I have been a licensed stylist for 8 years. I went through cosmetology school my junior and senior year of High School. I absolutely fell in love with the styling concept of being behind the chair. I wanted to keep learning how to braid and do updo’s and honestly I focused just on that during our free time in class. During that time there really wasn’t a demand for a hairstylist to just do styling all day; it was more common to do colors and cuts, and when I told others that I wanted to just style hair they would look at me in disbelief thinking I could never really make it in this industry. I transitioned into being a full time bridal hairstylist about 3 years ago and haven’t looked back!
What bridal trends are you loving right now?
I am absolutely loving the big natural glam waves that a lot of brides are doing right now, for bridesmaids I am loving the very soft curls all down.
What new trends can we expect to see this season?
I definitely think all down just curls are becoming really popular, very simplistic but elegant.
How do you stay inspired?
Honestly looking at others’ Instagram’s. Everyone has a different way to approach their looks and sometimes just scrolling really helps.
What advice would you give to a bridal hairstylist just getting started?
Do it!! It’s been such an amazing experience but just know that this industry is hard and it’s all by word of mouth so you might have to put some work in before you can go full time but once you do it’s worth it. Also, keep on attending continuing education. You can always learn something new from someone else.
Best advice to a bride regarding her hairstyle?
Find inspirational photos that have similar hair to you, including color. Plus get a trial girlfriend. The easiest way to overcome any concerns is to get a trial. You can always talk to your stylist and they can give you some advice as well on what they think will be best for you.
What is the one product/tool you can not live without?
AIIR Texture spray, I will forever love this spray!
Best advice you have ever been given in the hair industry?
To be myself, working in this industry you have to use your platform and Instagram is one of the main ones. Be raw and show others your normal life but also take breaks when they are needed.
What do you love to do outside of work?
I am a mom to a 5 year old little boy, so I honestly love to just go to the parks and watch him play. It gives me time to be away from my phone and not checking my inbox of mail from brides. But I also love to shop online!
Guilty pleasures?
I love to Netflix binge, or watch scary movies!
