Can you tell us a little more about you and your styling background?
My Mother was a hairdresser, so since I was a little girl I used to take out rollers for mum and the ladies would pay me 10 cents. I would then go to the shop and buy 10 pineapple lumps (they were 1 cent each back then) . When I was 16, I used to do work experience in salons until I got an apprenticeship with the BEST hairdresser in my little home town. She pushed me hard and I cried a lot, but I really owe my career to Cherie.
What bridal trends are you loving right now?
I am absolutely loving soft airy romantic textures. Unstructured waves, loose low updos and I will always love a romantic mermaid braid.
What new trends can we expect to see this season?
I think soft unstructured waves will be a hit and we will move away from the more structured Hollywood waves. I think brides are leaning towards more understated looks where they will feel more themselves.
How do you stay inspired?
Honestly your page, Beyond the Ponytail is such an amazing tool to stay inspired by seeing all the amazing artists pop up. Instagram is an amazing platform to stay inspired with so many tutorials and lives to watch.
What advice would you give to a bridal hairstylist just getting started?
Practice practice practice! Get a mannequin to learn and style on. When you feel confident, get a live model and recreate it on them. Mannequin hair compared to real hair are quite different and you really want to learn how to nail those styles on a person.
Best advice to a bride regarding her hairstyle?
Look for inspiration on your hairstylist’s page. Also, keep in mind your hair colour and texture. It makes a huge difference, so look for styles in your own hair colour.
What is the one product/tool you can not live without?
Definitely KYK Haircare Magic dust, this is the best volume powder I’ve used and helps me create soft airy styles.
Best advice you have ever been given in the hair industry?
Practice practice practice, push yourself out of your comfort zone and you will be so proud of yourself if you do, and I’m so glad I listened.
What do you love to do outside of work?
I absolutely love playing photographer for friends wanting lifestyle shots etc. Love having time with my kids and husband to go exploring new places either on foot or bike rides.
Guilty pleasures?
Massages! I’m absolutely addicted to them and have them weekly if I can. Also, online shopping.
